Colchester Little League powers to 11-12-year-old District I title

Colchester's Sawyer Cyphers had a three-run double in Saturday's 16-2 win over Shelburne in the 11- and 12-year-old Little League District I championship game.

The 11- and 12-year-old Little League all-stars from Colchester wasted no time seizing control of Saturday’s District I championship game.

Colchester plated nine first-inning runs on its way to the title in a 16-2, four-inning victory over Shelburne at Schifilliti Park.

Eli Davis (2-for-3) drove in four of the nine runs. He homered with a solo blast to right and, in his second at-bat of the frame, cleared the bases with a double for an 8-0 advantage.

The 11- and 12-year-old Little League all-stars from Colchester captured the District I tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Sawyer Cyphers also had a three-run double in the frame and Brody Griffiths drilled a three-run homer in the second inning for a 12-0 lead.

Starter Vinny Wagoner needed only 74 pitches over four innings to pick up the win, limiting Shelburne to two runs on four hits while striking out six batters.

Colchester wrapped its championship with a sizzling double play.  With runners on first and third, catcher Colton Lefebvre fielded a bunt and threw for the out at first base. Johnny Luter, the first baseman, fired back home, where Wagoner was waiting to apply the game-ending tag at the plate.

Colchester went 4-0 during the district’s double-elimination tournament. Colchester’s unbeaten run included a 16-15 walk-off win over South Burlington sandwiched between a pair of shutout victories.

This Colchester age group has appeared in four straight District I title games. The team awaits word on a possible state tournament, coach John Luter said.
