CVU boys golfers claim 23rd place at National Invitational

The Champlain Valley Union High School boys golf team captured 23rd place this week at the National High School Golf Invitational in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Alex Leonard and Stratton Mountain School’s Harrison Digangi, also representing Vermont as an individual, shared the honors as the top competitors from the Green Mountain State. Each finished three rounds at 22-over, tied for 99th overall.

The players teed it up at a different Pinehurst Resort course over three days — Nos. 6, 8 and 9.

CVU finished the week with a total of 1,012 to take 23rd out of 27 teams. The Redhawks improved their performances each day and finished with a 332 on Wednesday.

CVU's Alex Leonard tees off during the 2019 Vermont Division I boys golf championship at The Quechee Club on Thursday, Oct. 10. Leonard (4-over 76) helped the Redhawks to a first place team finish.

Leonard paced the effort with rounds of 80, 75 and 73. Evan Forrest (79-83-82), Cam Saia (88-94-82) and Kyle Rexford (96-85-85) filled out the four-man contingent for Vermont’s reigning Division I champs.

Digangi went 83-81-74, his third round the best by any of the five Vermont golfers.

The Utah representatives edged Florida by one, 903-904, for the team crown. Anawin Pikulthong of Arizona (10-under) rolled to a four-shot win for the individual championship, one of seven in the field of more than 225 golfers to break par for the week.
