One Williston community is finding connection through teddy bears.

A neighborhood near Allen Brook School in Williston has banded together by placing teddy bears in windows, creating a scavenger hunt to surprise and delight young pedestrians.

“It’s a beautiful thing,” said Kurt Simmers, whose house displays two bears. His wife Laura had decided to put the stuffed animals in the windows after a “neighborhood callout” to give young children something to do during walks.

Simmers said it is an active community with dog walkers, joggers and strollers even given the pandemic.

COVID-19 is the official name of the disease related to the coronavirus that first started to affect people in China at the end of 2019. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough and breathing trouble. Most develop only mild symptoms. But some people, usually those with other medical complications, develop more severe symptoms, including pneumonia, which can be fatal.

People are looking to get out and still have a sense of connection, according to Simmers. With more than 100 homes in the area, there is ample opportunity for bear finding.

The Howe family, who have a bear in their window, were out for a stroll and said they have noticed other families pointing out the bears. “It’s a great way for kiddos to have something to do,” said Babette Howe, a mom of two.

Vermont Teddy Bear also joined the hunt.
