Longtime Church Street sandwich shop moving this fall to Charlotte

A sandwich shop that has occupied a prime spot on the Church Street Marketplace for three decades will move this fall to a new space in Charlotte.

Red Onion's trademark sandwich, the Red Onion on honey-oat bread.

Red Onion, positioned across from Burlington City Hall on the busiest stretch of the pedestrian street, will vacate 140 Church St. to move to Charlotte Crossings, a new enterprise on U.S. 7 south of Ferry Road. The sandwich shop is expected to open at the new spot by mid-November, according to a Thursday afternoon news release announcing the move.

“I started to look for a new location once the pandemic started and impacted my business so significantly,” Mickey West, owner of Red Onion, said in the news release. “Between the high rent on Church Street and the dwindling foot traffic due to people increasingly working from home, making a move to Charlotte was a no-brainer. I’ll be closer to home, on busy Route 7, serving my food to a great community.”

Charlotte Crossings, located where Vermont Wildflower Farm had been, “features a multi-use commercial building for office, retail and restaurant space,” according to the website for the business. “We live in Charlotte and want more places to go in Charlotte.  We hope to create a destination where people can connect locally.”

Charlotte Crossings has hosted pop-up dining events and live music in its outdoor space this summer and fall. The Justin Panigutti Band will play the Backyard Bistro there at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“We are so excited to have Mickey relocate The Red Onion to Charlotte Crossings,” Mike Dunbar, owner of Charlotte Crossings, said in the news release. “We have been working to cultivate a community within our building, and The Red Onion is a great addition.”

Red Onion specializes in sandwiches and homemade bread but also sells soups and salads. At the new location, Red Onion will offer prepared foods for customers to heat and eat at home and will carry breakfast items including coffee, breakfast sandwiches, homemade muffins and scones.
