More Vermont restaurants feeling effects of COVID-19 on business to close temporarily

More restaurants in Vermont are shutting down for extended breaks as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hit businesses hard.

The Blue Paddle Bistro, South Hero 

“With the continuing restraints of COVID-19, and the uncertainty that the next few winter months will bring, (chef) Phoebe (Bright) and I have decided to close the Paddle TEMPORARILY effective immediately,” owner Mandy Hotchkiss wrote in a Jan. 6 Facebook post. “With the continuing pandemic, the rise in Vermont numbers and the new strain of virus that has come to our country recently, we feel it’s safest for you and for us to close for a spell.”

otchkiss wrote that the restaurant will take the time to retrain its crew and develop a new menu. This is the first time Blue Paddle Bistro has taken such an extended break since opening March 14, 2005, according to the post.

3 Squares Café, Vergennes

“Due to our pandemic-induced retraction in sales, the 3SC management team has made the hard decision to put the cafe into ‘hibernation’ for at least the next two months,” the restaurant announced in a Dec. 29 Facebook post. “Every year we operate at a loss during this period, but given the variety of barriers we are facing this year, it is a better financial decision for us to take a pause. It will certainly be sad to see our 14th birthday pass by next month without spending it with our Café friends & family, but this is the correct business decision for us.”

Rustic Roots, Shelburne

As the 3 Squares Café post mentioned, winter is typically a slow period for restaurants in Vermont, and some have taken breaks even in non-COVID years.

“It’s a bittersweet day before our usual extended winter hibernation,” Rustic Roots announced in a Jan. 3 Facebook post. The restaurant noted in a Dec. 27 post that it expects to see its patrons “in the early spring.”
