A late, slow start of spring work to rehabilitate Burlington’s City Hall Park — due to precautions taken to slow the spread of the new coronavirus — will delay re-opening to October, park officials say.

After years on the drawing board, the park upgrades began in July 2019. The city’s goal: to help reduce erosion and soil compaction; to improve tree health; and to add a splash/sprinkler pad for warm weather.

The interactive water feature might have seen some action had the park re-opened as planned late this summer.

Overall, resumption of work this month — nearly a month later than planned — is muted, by normal construction-season standards.

Small clusters of S.D. Ireland employees, widely dispersed, remain less conspicuous than their vehicles that now line the park’s northern edge on College Street.

As the pace of work quickens, construction-related parking will likely spread to St. Paul Street, according to an update posted by Parks, Recreation and Waterfront.

Another heads-up from the department for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians: The traffic lights at the intersection of St. Paul and Main streets will be disabled for several days and replaced by four-way stop signs — beginning June 2.

The temporary shut-down is due to upgrades to an electrical box at the park’s entrance, the news release states.

A terrace along College Street, approved by City Council but eliminated from the project, is now back in play thanks to cost savings last year, the department added.
