SOUTH HERO – Nine weeks ago, in the midst of the biggest public health crisis to hit the world in 100 years, Ari Moskowitz and Mike Carroll-Sherwin decided to start a new business, Timely Tire, a mobile tire changing operation that comes to the customer’s house.
Moskowitz and Carroll-Sherwin met working at a startup solar company in Study Hall, the co-working space above Stone Soup in downtown Burlington. Moskowitz has a legal background, while Carroll-Sherwin is a mechanical engineer with an MBA. Neither was happy doing what they were doing.
“Ari and I were sitting next to each other,” Carroll-Sherwin recalled. “Ari said, ‘What about a mobile tire changing business?'”
What about it indeed? Using his engineering background, Carroll-Sherwin put together the mobile shop. A full-size pickup with a 10,000-watt generator in its bed hauls a fully enclosed trailer with, among other things, a $12,000 tire balancing machine. The gas-powered generator is housed in a sound-suppression enclosure.
“We want to be able to pull into neighborhoods without waking up the neighbors or children,” Carroll-Sherwin said. “We’re trying to be out of sight, out of mind.”
Down the road, Carroll-Sherwin has plans for a fully electric operation, which would be much quieter.
Moskowitz said the response to Timely Tire on Front Porch Forum has been overwhelming. The pair is nearing 600 cars served in nine weeks, including new tires and repairs. Monica Rugg, who was having the tires on her truck replaced this week in South Hero, said the prices are competitive.
“This is a genius idea, absolutely,” Rugg said.
Moskowitz pointed out that the tire changing crew never gets inside the customer’s vehicle, an important consideration in the time of COVID-19.
“So it’s fully contact-less,” Moskowitz said.
