At least three Chittenden County schools reported a positive case of the novel coronavirus in their school population early this week.
Essex Elementary, South Burlington High School and Williston Central School, each in different school districts, announced they are working with the Vermont Department of Health as they investigate the virus’ impact on their school community.
Essex Westford School District
Essex-Westford School District families received this notice from Superintendent Beth Cobb on Monday:
“On October 12, the Essex Westford School District learned from the Vermont Department of Health (DOH) about a member of our school community who tested positive with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) at Essex Elementary School.”
The note said on Tuesday contact tracers would begin contacting individuals who may have had exposure (within 6 feet for 15 minutes) to the afflicted person the last time they were in school.
South Burlington School District
South Burlington Superintendent David Young sent an email Monday to families making a similar report about their situation.
“On October 10, we learned that a high school student within the South Burlington School District tested positive for COVID-19.”
Young said contact tracing has already been completed and the individual is working with the health department to determine when they can return to school.
Champlain Valley School District
The Champlain Valley School District reported Sunday a case at Williston Central School, a third through eighth grade school.
All three schools remained open. Only South Burlington indicated the positive case was in a student. The Essex and Williston schools, both comprised of elementary students, did not make it clear whether the case belonged to a student, teacher or staff member. All three school districts are in the process of systematically bringing back their elementary students to four or five days of in-person instruction, after beginning the year in a hybrid model with students attending two days a week.
The health department’s tracker of COVID-19 cases in schools also reported a previous Chittenden County case at Bellcate School, a special needs school in Essex, where the person has been listed as recovered.
Across the state, Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury has seen two cases and one was listed as active, Hartford High School has had one case and Williamstown Middle/High School has had a case.
