Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week: Winners for Nov. 2-8

The votes have been tallied and the winners of the Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week honors are … Sarah Hailey of Stowe girls soccer and Leo Riby-Williams of Montpelier boys soccer.

Hailey collected 49.98% of the 27,130 votes cast in the girls contest while Riby-Williams finished with a 46.9% share of the 12,026 votes tallied on the boys side.

The online voting at BurlingtonFreePress.com began Nov. 9 and closed at midnight on Nov. 12.

Sarah Hailey, Stowe girls soccer: The freshman had the bookend goals for 10th-seeded Stowe in its 4-0 triumph against Vergennes in the D-III title game. Hailey also set up another tally for the Raiders in their four-goal second half that sealed the program’s first trophy since 2016.

Leo-Riby Williams, Montpelier boys soccer: The Solons senior spent the better part of 79 minutes steering high-scoring Milton away from the goal during the Division II championship game. Then, with 66 seconds left, the star defender buried the winning goal to lift Montpelier to its first crown since 1996.

When’s the next vote?

The end of the fall season means the end of the Athlete of the Week contest until winter sports begin. That season is tentatively slated to start Jan. 11, and the next voting window will follow accordingly.
