Williston police investigating after discovery of body in van parked outside Walmart

Police are investigating after a dead body was found early Tuesday morning in a van parked outside Walmart in Williston.

Williston police responded to the store’s parking lot around 2 a.m. to investigate an odor coming from a 1996 Dodge Ram van with Arizona license plates. They found a person who was deceased in the rear area of the van, police said.

Vermont State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations is assisting Williston police with the investigation. They were on scene Tuesday morning with a representative from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the person’s remains had been removed from the van. The van is registered to a 61-year-old man, but authorities have not yet determined whether his identity matches that of the person found.

“Due to decomposition, positive identification will need to be made by the Medical Examiner’s Office,” Williston police wrote in a news release.
